Blue Devils Allow Two Pirate Hits in Sweep

The Kansas City Kansas Community College softball team swept the Independence Community College Pirates with scores of 9-0 and 13-0 May 1. There were two pitchers who threw for the Blue Devils in both games and both allowed just one hit each and combined for just one walk. Alyssa Droge went the distance in the opening game and Hanna Acree went the distance in game two.

In the first game, KCKCC had six hits but were able to score nine runs as the Pirates had three errors and let up six walks. The scoring started from Kaitlyn Cowan who hit a sacrifice ground out to the Pirate shortstop, scoring Sidney Sullivan from third base to make it 1-0 in the first inning. Kloey Dawes had two hits, one double and two RBIs. Ashton Russell also had two RBIs as she went 1-2 from the plate with a double. Kinlei Boley had the only homerun in the first game as she had a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 9-0.

Alyssa Droge went the distance allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out five of the 15 batters she faced.

In game two, the Blue Devils exploded for 13 runs in just four innings of offense. Both Russell and Boley had three RBIs and one home run each. Sullivan went 2-3 as the lead off and both of her hits were doubles. Victoria England entered the game in the bottom of the fourth inning and hit a shot down the left field line, scoring Sara Portela from third base for her second double and eighth RBI on the season. Dawes had a team-high three hits as she recorded three singles while going a perfect 3-3 from the plate.

Hanna Acree threw for all five innings letting up just one hit, no runs and three strikeouts.

The final regular season series for the Blue Devils is May 3 against the Coffeyville Red Ravens at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in Coffeyville, Kan.
