The Kansas City Kansas Community College softball team mercy ruled the Labette Community College Cardinals with a score of 8-0 on May 6. Alyssa Droge finished the opening game of the 2025 NJCAA Region VI DII Softball Tournament with a no-hitter while recording four strikeouts and just one walk. That makes it four consecutive shutout games for the pitcher from Tecumseh, Kan.
The Blue Devils started the scoring in the first inning as Kaitlyn Cowan grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Sidney Sullivan from third base. When it came to the second inning, KCKCC caught fire and put up a five-run inning. With the bases loaded, Abryelle Hill hit a line drive down the right field line scoring Sydney Becker, Kylie Vandervoort and Carly Cook to make it a four-run lead. In Sullivan's second at bat, she hit a single and was able to knock in Hill. The scoring capped off in the second inning after Cowan singled to left field, scoring Sullivan. The 6-0 lead continued into the fourth inning where Ashton Russell joined the fun and hit a two-RBI single to right field, scoring Kloey Dawes and Paige Smith.
After making it 8-0, all the Blue Devils had to do was to keep the Cardinals scoreless to complete the 8-run in five innings mercy rule. The first Labette batter was walked by Droge, putting a base runner on with no outs. The next batter bunted, sacrificing to move the base runner to second base. The next play was huge for both the Blue Devils and Droge, to complete her shutout game. With one out and a runner on second base, the next hitter had a line drive to right field looking to break Droge's no hitter. The Blue Devil right fielder, Dawes, quickly grounded the ball and shot the ball to the Blue Devil first baseman, Kinlei Boley, beating out the Cardinal runner to keep the no hitter alive. With two outs and a runner on third base, Droge stepped into the circle and did what she does best, striking out the batter to get the no hitter and complete the mercy rule.
KCKCC will now play the (1) Cowley College Tigers in the second round of the double elimination Region VI DII Softball Tournament at 1 p.m. May 7 at the JCCC Softball Field.
