Women's Basketball Plays Tight Battle With Allen, Falls 50-49

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – It was a low scoring affair on Saturday between Allen County and the KCKCC women's basketball team. Neither team reached 20 points in the first half, but drama played its part in the end as the game went into overtime, and the Blue Devils fell 50-49 on Sophomore Day.

After the game, sophomores Lacy Whitcomb, Jennifer Guilbeaux, T'Yonne Duncan, Francisca Oppong, Trinity McDow, Rebecca Christodoulou, Jada Mayberry and Miaya Ware were recognized for their contributions to the program.

KCKCC is now 17-12 overall and 6-7 in the KJCCC.

Both teams had low shooting percentages after the first half, with each squad shooting less than 30 percent from the floor. KCKCC led 14-13 at the break. Allen would break a 16-16 tie in the third quarter, going on an 8-2 run. Lacy Whitcomb later hit two straight three-point shots to cut the deficit, and the Blue Devils trailed 31-26 heading into the fourth.

Allen grabbed a larger lead in the fourth quarter, but KCKCC fought back. With less than a minute left in regulation, the Blue Devils trailed 42-38. Victoria Jones and Jada Johnson each scored baskets in the next 20 seconds, and the game eventually went into overtime. Allen outscored KCKCC 8-7 in the extra period and wound up with the win.

Johnson led the team with 12 points and Whitcomb had 10.

The Blue Devils are back in action on Wednesday when they play at Fort Scott at 5:30 p.m.
