Baseball Opens Campaign with Big Win Over Rockhurst JV

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – It was opening day on Tuesday for the KCKCC baseball team as they took advantage of the long layoff, by defeating Rockhurst University JV 26-1. The Blue Devils scored at least one run in every inning in which they came to the plate.

The Blue Devils begin the season at 1-0.

KCKCC grabbed a 2-0 lead after the first inning as Cole Dawson and Brendyn Bard came around to score. A big second inning would give the Blue Devils a comfortable 6-0 lead as four players came across the plate. Pablo Sanchez and Camden Karlin both reached base to begin the segment and would both come around to score later on. Dawson then hit a single before Palmer Hutchison reached base on a fielders choice. Bard would then come up with a huge triple to knock in the remaining runs in the inning.

After three innings of play the Blue Devils led 8-0 before Rockhurst got on the board with a solo home run in the fourth inning. Despite holding a large advantage the Blue Devils extended it even further as they plated one run in the fourth, two runs in the fifth, five runs in the sixth, three runs in the seventh and a big seven-run frame in the eighth.

Eli Tormes pitched five strong innings for KCKCC to earn the win. Alexander Carrillo, Joseph Reyes and Hunter Cashero came out of the bullpen to hold down the fort as the pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts.

Hutchison scored a team high five runs in the game and Bard went 3-for-3 at the plate scoring three runs and adding four RBI.

KCKCC will hit the field again on Sunday when they host Indian Hills CC for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
