No. 3 Seed Baseball Cruises Past No. 10 Seed Hutchinson CC To Advance

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The No. 3 seeded KCKCC baseball team scored four unanswered runs late in the game to advance in the Plains District Tournament over Hutchinson CC, with a 7-2 decision Wednesday night at Tointon Family Stadium. KCKCC led 3-2 after three innings before extending their lead in the fourth to run away with the game.

The Blue Devils are now 49-10 on the season.

After the Blue Devils shut down the Blue Dragons in the top of the first inning, they would get their taste at scoring two runs their turn at bat. Cole Dawson led off with a single before Palmer Hutchison drove him in with an RBI-double. Caleb Adams knocked him in across home plate with two outs to give KCKCC the early lead. After Hutchinson scored one run in the second inning, the Blue Devils chipped in another run as Darius Freeman scored on a Blue Dragons' error after reaching base earlier in the inning.

The Blue Dragons cut the deficit to one run at 3-2 in the top of the fourth, but two runs by the Blue Devils in the bottom half extended KCKCC's lead to 5-2. Payton McHarg put some power into a pitch to send it over the fence in center field. In the top of the sixth inning, the Blue Dragons were threatening again with one runner on base before Braedyn Sommer hit a deep fly ball to right field. As it looked as if the ball would reach over the fence, Pablo Sanchez was able to play spoiler by robbing Sommer of a home run. KCKCC would add another two runs in the eighth inning as the Blue Dragons' defense proved costly - committing five errors in the game.

Alan Mercado shut down the Blue Dragons over the course of the final three innings. McHarg tied for the team lead with two hits and added a game-high three RBI, while Freeman had two stolen bases.

The Blue Devils will now face the winner of No. 1 seed Cowley/No. 5 seed Johnson County CC on Thursday at 4 p.m., for a spot to advance to the championship game.
