Baseball Blitzes Highland, Earns Region VI Tournament Spot

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – A sweep was what the KCKCC baseball team was searching for when they matched up against Highland this past week. The Blue Devils were able to accomplish that as they defeated the Scotties 10-0, 10-2, 8-0 and 13-1 with the first two wins coming at home. The team now has their eyes set on the Region VI Tournament, which begins this week.

KCKCC moves to 35-20 overall and 17-15 in the KJCCC.

THURSDAY
In the first game of the series, the Blue Devils sprinted past the Scotties. It only took six innings to get the job done as the squad built a 5-0 lead after two frames. The Blue Devils added a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings as insurance to earn the run-rule victory. Aaron Lewis commanded the task on the mound and threw a no-hitter.

Hector Candelas, Brady Patterson, Jackson Mervosh and Lee Allen each had two hits. Jett Buck scored three runs.

In the second game, it was essentially the same result as the Blue Devils won 10-2. Highland did not record their first hit of the day until the second inning and the Blue Devils found themselves ahead 7-1 after six innings.

Candelas and Woita went yard with home runs in the game. Cooper Carlgren earned the win on the mound.

SATURDAY
Game three featured another stellar performance from the team as they blanked the Scotties 8-0. Three runs in the second inning got the team going, before they added four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Candelas and Patterson each hit a home run in the game with Candelas adding three RBI. Mason Davenport would earn the win on the mound and improve to 7-3 on the year.    

KCKCC finished the series off with a 13-1 win in the final game. The Blue Devils went up 6-0 after two innings of work, while adding another three runs apiece in the seventh and eighth innings.

Buck hit a home run in the game and Woita added two long bombs. Maclane Finley earned the win on the mound and had 10 strikeouts.

KCKCC advances to the Plains Region VI Tournament and will be one of eight host sites. The No. 8 seed Blue Devils will host No. 9 seed Dodge City starting on Wednesday in a best of three game series. The first game will start at 1 p.m.
