No.15 Blue Devils Fall Just Short to No.2 JCCC, 3-2 and 6-5

The No.15 Kansas City Kansas Community College baseball team (44-10) got swept by No.2 Johnson County Community College (46-10) 3-2 and 6-5 May 4 at the JCCC baseball field. The Blue Devils needed to win both games to have a possibility to share the conference title with Cowley College.

In the first game, Gehrig Goldbeck had an electric two-run double in the third inning making it 2-0. The Cavaliers had three solo home runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Besides Goldbeck, the only other Blue Devils to record hits came from Peyton Basler, Frankie Santiago and Austin Burroughs.

Aaron Lewis went the distance and recorded his first loss of the season. He allowed just six hits and struck out four batters.

For the second game, the Blue Devils were trailing the entire game until the top of the ninth inning when Basler had a double off the right field wall scoring two Blue Devils to make it 5-4 in favor of the Blue Devils. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Easton Roe hit a hard-hit ball to centerfield over Kerns head to win in a walk off fashion.

Donovan Johnson let up four runs from the five runs while striking out six Johnson batters. Caleb Reed threw for two innings and let up just one hit. Gavin Killion entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning and let up the two game winning runs in the ninth.

The Blue Devils will take on Seward County Community College in a best-of-three first round matchup this week. Games will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and if necessary, Saturday at the KCKCC baseball field.
