Blue Devils Annihilate Seward County in Game One, 21-0

The fifth seeded Kansas City Kansas Community College baseball team took down 12th seeded Seward County Community College 21-0 May 9 at the KCKCC baseball field for the first game of the opening round of the 2024 Plains District Baseball Championship Tournament. If the Blue Devils win the first two games (Thursday and Friday), a third game will not be needed (Saturday).

Brady Patterson started things off for the Blue Devils scoring Peyton Basler from third base and moving Gehrig Goldbeck from first to third with an RBI double off the left field wall. Jase Woita came up next and had a sacrifice ground out scoring Goldbeck from third. Freddie Nolen IV was next in line and scored Patterson with an RBI single to left field. Jackson Mervosh is back and doing what he's done all season knocking in Marcus Dierks from second base with an RBI single to right field. Brady Kern then hit a line drive shot over the center fielders head scoring both Mervosh and Austin Burroughs with a two-run RBI double. Basler came up to the plate for the second time in the inning and hit an RBI double to center field scoring Kern.

There was no score in the second inning but in the third inning, Goldbeck started things off with an RBI single. Patterson kept the line moving with an RBI base hit to left center field. Then Woita hit a sac-fly to center field scoring Goldbeck from third. Burroughs had a sac-fly to right field in the bottom of the fourth to make it 11-0 in favor of the Blue Devils. Goldbeck hit a two-run shot over the right fielder's head extending their lead. Then Nolen hit a high fly ball, which got lost in the sun as the Seward outfield couldn't locate it. It finally drops as Patterson crossed home plate. In the bottom of the fifth, Woita stepped up with the bases loaded and hit a grand slam to left center field making it 20-0. Jackson Weidner recorded his first hit of the season with an RBI single to right field, finishing it for the Blue Devils scoring. The game ended in the seventh inning due to mercy rule.

Maclane Finley threw for six innings letting up just three hits. He struck out five Saints and didn't let in a single run. Will Bartkoski came in for the top of the seventh and let up two hits but no runs.

The Blue Devils play Seward County again for game two at 1 p.m. May 10 at the KCKCC baseball field.
