Blue Devils Take First Round Against Cloud County, 3-1

The fifth seeded Kansas City Kansas Community College baseball team took down the fourth seeded Cloud County Community College 3-1 May 15 at Eck Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University for the first round of the 2024 Plains District Baseball Championship Tournament. This is a double elimination tournament, and the Blue Devils will take on Johnson County at 6 p.m. on Thursday for the second round. 

Marcus Dierks was responsible for the first run scoring for the Blue Devils in the second inning with a high chopper to the Thunderbird third baseman. Dierks beat out the throw and scored Frankie Santiago from third base.

Freddie Nolen IV had an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 2-0 in favor of the Blue Devils. Jase Woita scored from second base off the Nolen hit. Nolen would also advance to second base as the Cloud County centerfielder recorded an error.

The Blue Devils would be done scoring after Gehrig Goldbeck singled through the left side scoring Dierks and moving Jackson Mervosh to third base.

Cloud County scored one run in the bottom of the ninth inning to make it a two-run game but ended the game leading two runners stranded.

Maclane Finley threw for eight innings allowing just one earned run while giving up seven hits, three walks and striking out six batters. Dalton Smith recorded the save striking out the final batter in the game and didn't allow a single hit in his one inning of work.
