Blue Devils Season Ends with Loss to Hutchinson, 9-8

The fifth seeded Kansas City Kansas Community College baseball teams season ended in Wichita with a loss to second seeded Hutchinson Community College 9-8 May 17 at Eck Stadium for the 2024 Plains District Baseball Championship Tournament. The Blue Devils end their season with an overall record of 47-12 and 24-9 in conference play.

The Blue Devils struck first, scoring one run from a Hutchinson passed ball scoring Peyton Basler from third in the first inning. They kept things going in the top of the second inning scoring three more runs. Jackson Mervosh singled to left center field scoring Freddie Nolen IV. Basler had a sac-fly to centerfield scoring Mervosh from third base and advancing Brady Kern from second base to third base. Kern would later score from a wild pitch.

In the fifth inning, Brady Patterson hit a solo home run to retake the lead, 5-4. Nolen then doubled to left field and scored Jase Woita. One inning later, Woita came up to bat again and doubled to left center scoring Basler. Frankie Santiago then had a single up the middle scoring Woita to make it 8-4 with just three innings remaining.

That would be it for the Blue Devils scoring, with Hutchinson scoring four more runs to tie it up going into the ninth inning. Blue Dragons third baseman, Blake Bradford would end the game in walk-off fashion with a double to right center scoring Cooper Wesslund from first base.  

Aaron Lewis threw for five innings and let in seven runs from the seven Hutchinson hits. He also walked two batters and struck out two. Gavin Killion recorded the loss while letting in the final run in the ninth inning.
