Men's Basketball Makes Comeback Run, Defeats North Arkansas 83-81

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – A big comeback by the Kansas City Kansas Community College men's basketball team helped them seal an 83-81 win inside the KCKCC Fieldhouse tonight over North Arkansas College. Zach Nelson capped off a run from the Blue Devils with two free throws in the end to help them stave off a loss at home.

KCKCC is now 7-4 on the season.

North Arkansas College would jump out to a 10-7 lead in the first three minutes of play as it was a fast paced first half. KCK later cut the deficit to one point as Bradley Lightbourne and Jerry Maxinaud combined to score six straight points for the Blue Devils, making it 18-17 North Ark. Joshua Dames later hit a layup to give the Blue Devils the lead, but the Pioneers quickly sank a three-pointer to regain some momentum. The run-and-gun mentality continued for both teams and Caleb Jones hit a three-pointer with 1:16 left in the half to put the Blue Devils within one point again at 45-44.

The Blue Devils would put together a rally in the second half however. North Arkansas would build a 71-58 lead with 9:46 to play, but Jones and Maxinaud gave KCK a boost and scored eight points to cut North Arkansas's lead to 73-66. The Blue Devils then trailed 80-72, but baskets from Maxinaud, Shaylon Janloo and Nelson put both teams at an 81-81 tie with 1:02 left. Nelson would later sink two free throws and the Blue Devils forced a tie up at the other end, which sealed the win for the Blue Devils.

Maxinaud led the team with 16 points along with six rebounds, while Lightbourne posted 15 points. Janloo (13), Jones (12) and Dames (10) also posted in double-figures.

KCKCC will return to action on Monday when they host On Point Academy at 6 p.m. inside the KCKCC Fieldhouse.
