Men's Basketball's Late Run Leads To Upset Over No. 9 DMACC

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – A late run toward the end gave the Kansas City Kansas Community College men's basketball team a 75-64 win over No. 9 Des Moines Area Community College Saturday afternoon inside the KCKCC Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils led by one point late in the second half before nine unanswered points catapulted them for the upset.

KCKCC earns their third win in the last four games and moves to 8-5 overall on the year.

KCKCC led early on in the contest holding a 15-13 lead in the first half. Des Moines Area CC would later grab a 30-27 lead at the 8:11 mark and scored seven unanswered points. They eventually built that lead to 41-32 behind some hot shooting. However, the Blue Devils would climb back in the game and enter the locker room with some momentum. Jerry Maxinaud and Cortez Howlett put the team within three points before Bradley Lightbourne sank a three-pointer from the corner with 34 seconds left to tie the game at 41-41.

The Blue Devils would ride thed momentum into the next half as they led 55-46 seven minutes in. The Bears would cut the deficit to one going on an 8-0 run, but their offense would stall briefly as KCKCC took a 60-54 lead after two free throws from Joshua Dames at the 8:09 mark. DMACC cut the lead to just one point again, but KCKCC went on a 9-0 run to eventually take the victory.

Lightbourne led the team with 17 points and tied for the team high of six rebounds with Maxinaud. Caleb Jones and Howlett also added double-figures with 13 and 11 points respectively.

KCKCC will return to action on Wednesday when they hit the road for a matchup with Metropolitan CC. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
