Blue Devils Slip In Final Seconds At JCCC

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The KCKCC men's basketball team faced off once again with No. 5 Johnson County CC with the game coming down to the wire. Both teams were squared at 61-61 in the final seconds, but the Cavaliers pulled out the win over the Blue Devils after a basket on one of the final possessions, 63-61.

The Blue Devils are now 18-8 overall and 9-2 in the KJCCC on the season.

Caleb Jones and Bradley Lightbourne got the Blue Devils on the board first with two baskets. KCKCC would go up 10-7 after a layup from Bryce Johnson with 14:14 left in the half, but JCCC grabbed the lead at 12-11 three minutes later. The Blue Devils would go on a stretch of five minutes grabbing the lead, which was capped off by a three-pointer from Cortez Howlett as the team led 19-14. Both teams worked their way to a 25-25 tie before the Cavaliers held a four-point lead at halftime.

JCCC would come out of the second half on a 9-4 run to lead 38-29, but Howlett and Johnson connected on back-to-back three-point shots making it 38-35 Cavaliers. The two squads continued to trade baskets and JCCC's lead would grow to 11 points with 6:42 to play, but the Blue Devils stormed back cashing in on free throws to cut the deficit to one at 56-55. With time running out Johnson was fouled and was able to make one-of-two free throws with 15 seconds left to tie the game at 61-61. JCCC would get the ball and found a way to convert in the end with a basket down low to inch past the Blue Devils.

Johnson and Howlett both scored in double-figures with 15 and 10 points respectively.

The Blue Devils next play on the road at Neosho County CC on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
