Men's Basketball Stays On Point With Weekend Sweep

QUINCY, Ill. - The KCKCC men's basketball team continued their winning ways this weekend as they defeated John Wood CC 82-73 on Friday and Illinois Central College 74-65 on Saturday. 

The Blue Devils improved to 8-5 on the season and have won six games in a row.

On Friday, after John Wood had an early surge to start the game the Blue Devils grabbed their second lead of the game at 29-28 when Gary Bess Jr. hit a layup with 34 seconds left in the first half. The Blazers then hit a three-pointer before time expired and took a 31-29 lead at halftime. KCKCC opened the second half with a run of points as Jaylon Moses, Jalen Broyles and Bradley Lightbourne all made shots. Joshua Dames would hit a three-pointer with 15:55 left to give KCKCC the 46-40 lead.

John Wood climbed back in it on several occasions, but the Blue Devils continued to hold a narrow lead at three points at 76-73 with 2:03 to play. Dames and Lightbourne closed out the game by scoring six straight points to help KCKCC win.

Lightbourne led the team with 29 points and eight rebounds. Dames and Broyles each scored 14 and 13 points respectively.

The Blue Devils then capped off the weekend with a close win over Illinois Central. After both teams were tied 33-33 at halftime, KCKCC outscored the Cougars 41-32 in the second half. Broyles and Jeremiah Stanton opened up the period with a 6-0 run before Illinois Central climbed back in it to trail 49-48 at the 11:47 mark. Moses later gave the Blue Devils a 65-57 lead with 3:49 to play and KCKCC held off a last stand from the Cougars.

Lightbourne led the team again in scoring with a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds, while pitching in eight assists. Broyles also added double-figures with 13 points.

KCKCC will play one last game before the Christmas break as they host Iowa Western CC Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
