Softball Starts Season 4-0 With Wins Over MNU JV, State Fair CC

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The KCKCC softball team began their season on Monday with 10-2 and 5-4 victories over MidAmerica Nazarene JV, before sweeping State Fair CC on Wednesday.

The Blue Devils begin the year at 4-0 overall.

MNU CONTESTS
In the first contest against MNU JV, the Blue Devils fell behind 1-0, but took the lead in the bottom of the first inning with two runs before adding another run in the second inning. With a 3-2 lead in the third inning, the Blue Devils created some breathing room after posting a five-run frame which eventually led to their win. KCKCC added one run in the fourth and another in the sixth, while holding down the fort on defense to take care of the Pioneers. 

Breanna Droge threw six innings - allowing two runs and striking out nine batters. Madison Pope paced the offense with three RBI and Bradi Basler had three hits. Basler and Savannah Maynard each hit home runs in the game.

In the second contest it was a bit tighter, but the Blue Devils pulled it out 5-4. KCKCC held a 5-1 lead in the sixth before allowing three runs to the Pioneers, but it was not enough for a comeback. 

McKenna Lester led the team with three hits and Emma De Brouwer had three RBI and a triple. Basler pitched a complete game and had six strikeouts. 

STATE FAIR CC CONTESTS
The Roadrunners took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, but the Blue Devils added a run in the bottom half to trail by just one run. KCKCC would then blow the game open with five runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth to eventually wind up with the victory.

Maynard went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, Kaitlyn Bradbury, Maya Sheldon and McKenzie Ogden also had two hits each with a combined total of five RBI. Droge earned the win in the circle - throwing a complete game allowing four hits and just two earned runs. 

In the second game, the Blue Devils got out to a 4-0 lead in the first five frames. State Fair managed to tie the game at 4-4 in their last chance seventh inning to send the game into extra innings. Both teams went scoreless in the eighth inning, but the Blue Devils were able to prevail in the ninth when Ogden hit a fly ball into center field to score the game-winner. 

Maynard hit her second home run of the day and had two hits and two RBI, while Ogden also had two hits and an RBI.

Basler earned the win in the circle striking out a season-high 11 batters and allowing four earned runs.

KCKCC has a quick turnaround with a doubleheader on Thursday at home, hosting Marshalltown CC at 1 and 3 p.m.
