No. 10 Softball Sweeps Ellsworth CC Sunday

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - A walk-off hit by the KCKCC softball team helped the Blue Devils secure a sweep at home over Ellsworth CC on Sunday, by scores of 13-8 and 5-4. The Blue Devils held off a comeback from the Panthers in both contests to get back on the winning end.

The Blue Devils improve to 10-2 overall on the season.

In the first game, the Blue Devils got out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, but the Panthers came back to tie things up at 4-4 the next inning. After falling behind 6-5 in the top of the fifth, the Blue Devils rattled off eight runs to create some separation. Despite two runs from Ellsworth in the seventh inning, KCKCC held on for the 13-8 victory.

Savannah Maynard and Bradi Basler each had two hits for the squad and Lauren Salpas led the team with three RBI. Breanna Droge improved to 6-0 in the circle throwing all seven innings and striking out six.

Game two was a battle from the start. Ellsworth CC gave the Blue Devils a scare as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning. However, the Blue Devils responded with a trio of runs in the fourth. After both teams traded one run in the fifth and sixth innings it came down to the bottom of the seventh frame where the Blue Devils walked it off for the win. 

McKenna Lester had a team high three hits. Emma De Brouwer and Maya Sheldon added two hits apiece. De Brouwer also had three RBI and Basler earned the win to go to 4-2 on the season, as she struck out seven Panthers in six frames.

The Blue Devils are back in action today against Ottawa JV at 1 p.m. in Ottawa, Kan.
