Blue Devils Take Both vs Coffeyville, 12-3 and 13-3

The Kansas City Kansas Community College softball team (32-16) swept Coffeyville Community College (7-25) 12-3 and 13-3 Apr. 30 in Coffeyville, Kan. The Blue Devils are tied with Fort Scott for third place in the KJCCC with both teams obtaining conference records of 14-4. This week, the Blue Devils will take on Johnson County Friday and then Fort Scott on Saturday. Fort Scott will play Independence Friday before meeting the Blue Devils.

In the first game, the Blue Devils added up for 17 total hits. It was just a 5-2 game heading into the seventh inning. Savannah Short led off the inning with a solo homer. Then with two outs, Gabby King hit a fly ball to left field, and Jaycee Long scored from second base. McKenna Lester came up to bat with the bases loaded later in the inning and produced a two-run single down the right field line. Adrianna Smith then had a two-run double to center field. Short came back up in the same inning and recorded an RBI double. The Blue Devils scored seven total runs and added a 10-run cushion heading to the bottom of the seventh. Lester had a team-high four RBI from her two hits. Both Sydney Becker and Short had a home run and each recorded two RBI. Kloey Dawes and Adrianna Smith both had two RBI and combined for four hits.

Alyssa Droge threw for six of the seven innings letting in just two runs and allowed four hits while tallying five strikeouts. Lillian Fisher came pitched the bottom of the seventh and let in one run from the two Red Raven hits.  

For the second game, Becker started the game off with a double, eventually getting hit in from a Lester ground ball to the first baseman. Adrianna Smith kept the train rolling in the first inning while recording an RBI single. The Blue Devils started the game off with two runs in the first inning before King scored from second base in the second inning. Adrianna Smith had an RBI single, and then Short had an RBI groundout scoring Dawes. But they weren't done just yet. Annika Smith had an RBI triple making it 6-0 after just two innings. Short led the team with four RBI and Becker, Lester and Adrianna Smith all had two RBI. Dawes walked twice but went for a perfect 2-2 at the plate and added an RBI.

Hanna Acree threw for 5.1 innings letting in just one run and four hits. She struck out four batters as well. Both Landri Lopez and Lillian Fisher combined for the remaining .2 innings.

 

The next series for the Blue Devils is against Johnson County Community College at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. May 3 at the KCKCC softball field.
