Blue Devils Host Successful Triangular

The Kansas City Kansas Community College softball team hosted a Triangular March 7-9, which included teams from North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), Bryant and Stratton College (WI) and Kirkwood Community College. On Friday, the Blue Devils fell to NIACC 8-6, but took down Bryant and Stratton 4-3 from a nine-inning walk off base hit from Sidney Sullivan. On Saturday, No. 9 Kirkwood mercy ruled the Blue Devils 8-0. In game two of the day, KCKCC turned it around and mercy ruled Bryant and Stratton 8-0. On the final day of the KCKCC Triangular, the Blue Devils swept the day, beating Bryant and Stratton 5-2 and No. 9 Kirkwood 7-1. The KCKCC softball team went 4-2 on the weekend, ending the weekend with three straight wins.

Day One:

In game one,  four KCKCC errors gave the Trojans four unearned runs which ended up costing the Blue Devils the game. Kaitlyn Cowan, Ashton Russell and Abryelle Hill all recorded two hits, while Hill recorded one RBI. Isabelle Dufva connected on a base-clearing double in the bottom of the sixth inning, resulting  in two runs. Carly Cook and Kinlei Boley brought in the two other runs for the Blue Devils. Alyssa Droge threw for 6.1 innings letting in six runs, three earned, one walk and struck out 11 of the 31 batters she faced as the Blue Devils fell to the Trojans in the opening game 8-6.

In game two, Sullivan came to play and went 4-4 from the plate while knocking in the walk-off runner in the bottom of the ninth inning. Cowan hit her first collegiate home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to force another inning due to the Bobcats scoring two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Hanna Acree threw for 7.1 innings and let in three runs from the eight Bobcat hits. She walked one batter and struck out three of the 33 batters she faced in the 4-3 win over Bryant and Stratton.

Day Two:

In game one, KCKCC put together just three hits as a team. Those hits came from Kylie Vandervoort, Lilea Prahm and Boley. Droge and Acree threw for the first four innings letting up six runs from seven hits. Lillian Fisher entered the game in the fifth inning and let in one run while walking three batters in her one inning of work. The Eagles won with a final score of 8-0.

In game two, the 12 Blue Devil hits turned into eight runs to complete the eight-run mercy rule after five innings of play. Alyssa Droge threw for all five innings and let up no runs and just two hits. She struck out six of the 18 batters she saw. Russell went 3-3 from the plate and knocked in three RBIs. Sydney Becker led the team off and went 2-4 while adding one RBI. Both England and Hill hit a homerun to boost the Blue Devils to an 8-0 mercy rule.

Day Three:

In game one, Vandervoort recorded a triple while going 2-2 from the plate. Jaden Cook went 1-3 from the plate and got her first collegiate RBI in a Blue Devil jersey. Droge went the distance and allowed in two runs off the five Bobcat hits. She struck out nine batters and walked three as the Blue Devils won 5-2.

In game two, Sullivan once again shined on the Blue Devil offense while going 3-3 from the plate and hit her first collegiate grand slam in the bottom of the second inning. Boley had a double and went 2-3 from the plate while hitting in two runners. She also pitched the entire game and let up just one run and three hits while striking out five of the 27 batters she faced. KCKCC upset the No.9 Kirkwood Eagles 7-1 in the final game of the weekend.

The next series for the Blue Devils is Mar.12 as they take on North Dakota State College of Science at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the KCKCC softball field.
