Women's Basketball Downs No. 1 JCCC 61-59 In Thrilling Upset

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - In a thrilling matchup the Kansas City Kansas Community College women's basketball team found a way to upset the No. 1 Johnson County CC Cavaliers Saturday afternoon inside the KCKCC Fieldhouse, 61-59 - giving the Cavaliers their first loss of the season.

The Blue Devils were poised the entire way as they move to 12-8 overall and 4-3 in the KJCCC.

KCKCC fell behind 10-2 to start the game, but maintained some momentum after Aysia Arrowood and Jennifer Guilbeaux scored the final five points of the quarter for the Blue Devils. JCCC led 18-9 heading to the second period. Late in the second quarter, Trinity McDow and Arrowood connected on back-to-back shots and the Blue Devils climbed back tying the game at 24-24. The Cavaliers however were able to close out the half on an 8-0 run and led 32-24 at the break.

De'Jaria Guillroy and Ikia Elam gave the Blue Devils a jolt in the third quarter and fought back to make it 34-30 Cavaliers. Lacy Whitcomb would then sink a three-point shot and the deficit was down to one point. Whitcomb would then score the next eight points for the team and the Blue Devils found themselves up five points. In the final quarter the Blue Devils led narrowly, but the Cavaliers would not go away as they tied the game at 57-57 after a three-point shot from Jaylen Townsend. Guilbeaux would score the Blue Devils's final four points and their defense buckled down to pull off the upset at 61-59 in the final seconds.

Whitcomb led the team with 18 points and nine rebounds. Arrowood would score 12 points and Guilbeaux added 11.

The Blue Devils return to the floor on Monday for a road game at Labette CC at 5:30 p.m.
