
Big finishes powered Kansas City Kansas Community to a 3-0 volleyball sweep of Labette Wednesday night.
The Blue Devils improved to 5-3 heading into a two-day tournament in New Port Richey, Fla. The Blue Devils take on Morton and No. 1 ranked and defending national champion Richard Bland on Friday and Andrew and host Pasco Hernandez on Saturday.
Leading Labette 11-10 in the first set, the Blue Devils surged to a 20-14 lead, and then held on for a 25-19 win. The two teams were deadlocked 13-13 in the second set when KCKCC opened a 19-15 lead on the way to a second 25-19 win. The Blue Devils took no chances in the third set, racing to a 13-7 lead en route to a 25-13 win.
Balance was the key to the sweep. Freshman Mercedez Brown of Clinton, Mo., led in kills with 13 while Blue Springs sophomore Jayda Watson added 10 and Glodalys Colon of San Luis, Puerto Rico, nine. Topeka Seaman sophomore Taryn Dial led in assists with 38 and four Blue Devils had eight or more digs. Sophomore Amauri Browning of Alliance, Neb, led with 11 followed by Brown (10), Dial (9) and Manhattan sophomore Hayley Hastings (8).
Next home action for the Blue Devils comes Sept. 15 when they host a triangular with Ottawa and Park junior varsity teams.
