Blue Devils First Day at OWT Ends .500

The Kansas City Kansas Community College women's volleyball team took down Southeastern Community College and then fell to No.9 Kirkwood Community College Aug. 23 at the Opening Weekend Tournament (OWT) in Rockford, Ill.

In the first match, the Blue Devils lost the first set 25-16 but would win the next three 25-22, 25-22 and 25-19. Mayah Pridgett led the team in 14 kills on her 27 total attempts. Mercedez Brown was right behind her with 13 kills on 43 total attempts. Briazia Osborne led the team in assists with 26 and Veronica Rolando had 17. Alejandra Aponte had a team high 22 digs and Nykeriah Allen had four blocks with Sophia Frerking right behind her with three. Brown ended the match with a team high 19 points, her second highest as a Blue Devil.

In the second match, the Blue Devils fought the No.9 team the country hard but fell short 3-1 in sets. Kirkwood won the first set 25-20, third set 25-19 and fourth set 25-20. KCKCC was able to take the second set 25-19. Brown led the team with 15 kills on 35 total attempts, and Pridgett was not far behind with 13 from her 37 total attempts. Osborne and Rolando once again led the team with assists with Osborne finishing with 21 and Rolando 13. Aponte, Brown and Ava Rann were the only Blue Devils who had double digits in digs and combined for 38 total digs.
